March 2012 Training

Due to a conflict CAL FIRE has rescheduled our March 3rd training to March 10th. I realize that we always have our training's on the first Saturday of the month so that people can schedule their time, unfortunately fire crew at Airport Station 21 have their own scheduled training on the morning of March 4th.

So as it stands now our training will be March 10th with Battalion Chief Bill Fisher and the crew at Airport Station 21 covering the following: Fire Safety, another important class for our first responder's or anyone who owns a home in a fire rich area. Some of the things they cover is proper clothing and boots, how to park our vehicles while we are on properties, how fire moves, danger signs to look for and one of the most important part of the class....the Incident Command System, a huge part of any fire be it small or large. CAL FIRE always puts on a great class for us.

When: March 10th

Time: 9:00 AM till 11:00

Where: Community room-Airport Station 21

4671 Broad Street

San Luis Obispo

Thanks everyone. Sorry for the change but we appreciate CAL FIRE and the training they provide for us, so hopefully everyone will still be able to join us. Again, this training is open to anyone and everyone.

Exciting SLOHEET upcoming events for 2012

January 7th: We start off the year with our general meeting, which will be held in the community room at Woods Humane Society 875 Oklahoma, San Luis Obispo. At this meeting we will be going over events from 2011 and do a meet and greet for all members. Also, we will be electing a new team of directors.

February 4th: HEET Procedures and Protocol (Community room Woods Humane Society, 875 Oklahoma Ave., San Luis Obispo): At this meeting we will be going over our manuals for first responders and sheltering crews. After going over what each groups does, we will then split up into 2 groups and our lead people will go over all procedures that we have developed over the years. This is one of our most important meeting where we learn what happens and what to do when we are called out on an emergency. This is also a good time to learn whether you would be comfortable in the field on the actual emergency or helping at the sheltering area helping with intake, care and feeding of the displaced animals.

March 3rd: Fire Safety with CAL FIRE (community room-Airport Station 21, 4671 Broad Street, San Luis Obispo). Battalion Chief Bill Fisher and the crew of Airport Station 21 will be going over fire safety, another important class for our first responders or anyone who owns a home in a fire rich area. Some of the things they cover is, proper clothing, boots, how to park our vehicles while we are on properties, how fire moves, danger signs to look out for and one of the most important part of the class....the Incident Command System, a huge part of any fire, be it small or large. CAL FIRE always puts on a great class for us.

April 7th: Human First Aid: Nan Bowman with Action Safety Education (Community room Woods Humane Society) will be going over basic first aid and CPR. We will learn how to treat injuries in the field and how to perform CPR, which we will be certified in both by the end of the class. You don't want to miss this class with the recent changes in CPR. This is the only class that we ask you to pay a charge ($ 25.00) to help cover the cost of supplies and the instructors time.

May 5th: Trailer Safety with CHP Officer Ty Murray being held at Cuesta College Parking lot A-1. With Spring in the air it's a good time to take our meeting outside, where everyone is encouraged to bring their tow vehicle and trailers to the class. Officer Murray will be going over trailer safety, hazards of the road and laws that affect gooseneck trailers. After he is done speaking, he will take a look at our trucks/trailers and give us suggestions if anything needs to be changed. Also, at this time we have new members back-up and do maneuvers though a course we set up.

June 2nd: Horse Triage/First Aid: Andy Dibbern, DVM and who is also our State Equine Emergency Network Coordinator (Equine Center 4850 Davenport Creek Road, San Luis Obispo) will be joining us to go over basic triage/first aid for horses. This class will cover shock, bleeding and bandaging of wounds, colic, burns, how to handle an unruly horse, smoke inhalation, plus much more.

July7th: Anderson Sling and Glide Demo: Once again Dr. Dibbern will be working with us along with CAL-FIRE Airport Station 21 at the Equine Center. This is one of our most exciting classes. Dr. Dibbern and CAL-FIRE will be giving a demonstration of the Anderson Sling on a live horse. The Anderson Sling is used for vertical lifts when an animal is unable to be moved any other way. Also, a demo of the Rescue Glides will be given. The glides are used to “slide” a “downed” animal up a hill. HEET was instrumental in suppling both the Anderson Sling and the Rescue Glides to the county of SLO where they are housed with CAL FIRE to use whenever the need arises.

August 4th: We will be hosting the Estero HAM Radio Club from Morro Bay (community room Woods Humane Society). The club will be going over their roles when the county is in emergency mode. This group has been very helpful and encouraging for all us newbie HEET operators. Speaking of HAM Radio, there is an upcoming class for anyone interested in becoming a licensed HAM operator. The class will be held January 8th in Santa Maria. For more information go to http://w6nbc.com

September 8th: Mock Drill/HAM Radio Practice: Location to be announced We will have a mock drill where we will actually have everyone bring their trucks/trailers to a barn that is set up with our ICS trailer, horses that we can practices loading and than take them to the sheltering area to be unloaded for intake of the sheltering area. At this time we will also be practicing our HAM communications. This is a great exercise for us to learn where we need to improve and change things for the better.

Our meetings start at 9:00 AM and are on the first Saturday of the month except for the month of September, which will be on the second Saturday due to the holiday weekend.

Woods Humane Society is kind enough to share their community room with us at no cost, which we greatly appreciate. We ask each member to bring with them any of the following from Woods wish list. It is our way of saying thank you to Woods for offering their room to us.
